The last three years at Healthy Democracy have been a triumph in collaboration. The art of practicing democracy in every decision, every interaction, every transition takes a dedication to and perseverance in our values that is truly special. Three years ago, HD transitioned from a traditional staff structure to a non-hierarchical staff structure. With the support of our former Executive Director, Robin Teater, and our Board, we forged a new road ahead with four equal Directors at the helm. We sought new partnerships, designed, coordinated, and ran groundbreaking civic assemblies, helped fuel and shape the growing deliberative democracy movement in the US, and updated our internal systems to reflect the radically collaborative nature of our work. Don’t be fooled – it hasn’t been easy and it hasn’t been perfect. But it has been beautiful. We endeavor to practice what we preach – day in and day out – and it is a special place to belong.
Change then – 2021 – brought the opportunity to build upon our legacy of the Citizens’ Initiative Review by bringing our unique services to local communities across the nation – and doing it our way. It allowed HD to fully embrace its new direction with a shared directorship. Now, change is once again afoot and we are thrilled for all the opportunities that come with it. Change now will bring new expertise, perspectives, and energy to help HD continue its essential mission: put people at the center of democracy.
As you may have heard, two of our beloved staff are transitioning to new opportunities. Alex will continue fostering a more collaborative world by facilitating a multi-organizational group working to steward the McKenzie River watershed. And Kacey is pursuing her culinary passions by launching a catering company – and dreaming of a future deliberative community cafe. Both Alex and Kacey will continue working with HD staff to ensure a smooth transition.
Now – drumroll please – on to the incredible new staff members joining HD’s team. Please join me in welcoming Lauren Babcock and Justin Reedy to the HD family. Lauren brings a dedication to a more accessible democracy and a human-centered approach to process design. Justin has extensive experience designing, facilitating, coordinating, and analyzing deliberative processes of all kinds. We couldn’t be more excited to work with Lauren and Justin. Knowing that so many talented and dedicated people are out there fills us with hope for the future.
Grounded in our values, strengthened by our teamwork, and with a thoughtful eye toward healthier future systems, HD continues to evolve.
